How 'South Park' influenced TromaDance Film Festival

Posted on August 14, 2015

The creation myth of the TromaDance Film Festival in Brooklyn this weekend is that it was started in 1999, when "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were treated rudely at Sundance.

This 16th annual edition features: "Return to Nuke 'Em High: Volume 2," about teenagers fighting mutant bullies; and "Clinger," starring scream-queen Debbie Rochon.

Troma chief Lloyd Kaufman, best known for creating "The Toxic Avenger," says "Clinger" is "a Hitchcockian and Raimi-ish combination of hilarity and horror all rolled up into the most entertaining cinematic enchilada you will see this year."

TromaDance will be screening Skinner's This Horror Most Unreal

Posted on July 13, 2015

The Troma Team is thrilled to announce that "This Horror Most Unreal" is an official TD selection. Directed by acclaimed artist Skinner and Max Minor, the film is "an animated silent black & white cavalcade of forgotten evil. Venture to realms of frightening new realities, rife with dangers unknown to mortal man."

The film will headline TromaDance's Animated Block on July 25th. The Troma Team will be announcing it's official features next week.

NEW FILMS ADDED: Rodney Ascher's The Nightmare, Luke Hyams' X Moor, and Michael Steves' Clinger

Posted on July 7, 2015

TromaDance Selection Committee is delighted to announce that Rodney Ascher's (Room 237) brilliant and terrifying The Nightmare will be screened at 16th Annual Tromadance Film Festival.

The Nightmare (USA) "shows a truth more frightening than fiction," warns The Guardian, and has been hailed by critics since premiering at this year's Sundance and South by Southwest film festivals.

TromaDance 2015 will also feature two one-of-a-kind tour de force feature films, X Moor (UK) and Clinger (USA).

Written and directed by Luke Hyams, X Moor was described by TromaDance founder, Lloyd Kaufman, as "the most frightening and surprising movie that TromaDance has ever presented. I'm still having nightmares and they ain't the Rodney Asher's kind."

Kaufman, also goes on to say that Clinger directed by Michael Steves, "is a Hitchcockian and Raimi-ish combination of hilarity and horror all rolled up into the most entertaining cinematic enchilada you will seen this year." The film features the queen of independent cinema, Debbie Rochon.

Georgia and Matt ravel to the remote English Exmoor to capture footage of legendary panthers that are said to roam the moor. When the couple is joined by animal tracker Fox, they realize they are not the only people in the wilderness, and that they might be the hunted ones...from the producer of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Fern Petersen has her life turned upside down when her overly affectionate boyfriend, Robert Klingher, dies in an embarrassing accident. When Robert returns from the dead as a love-sick ghost, he plots to kill Fern so they can be together forever.

The TromaDance Selection Committee will also be announcing a "Secret Selection" in the coming days. Final arrangements are being made to secure this surprise. Kaufman stated "this year TromaDance is unspooling the very best movies in our 16th year of history. Just the fact that TromaDance can 'unspool' digital films is further proof of how this festival is amazing."

FrightPix Presents: TROMADANCE 2015 at The Paper Box, NYC - July 24-25!

Posted on May 15, 2015

The Troma Team is proud to announce that the 16th ALL FREE Tromadance Film Festival will take place on July 24 and 25, 2015, at The Paper Box in Brooklyn, NY. As they have for 16 years, true cinephiles can shed their stressful workaday troubles and celebrate, en masse, the wonder that is genuine independent cinema!

The Toxic Avenger polishes his garments for Tromadance's night premiere.

According to Wikipedia "The idea for TromaDance was developed by Troma president Lloyd Kaufman, who got the idea from South Park co-creator Trey Parker (whose debut film, Cannibal! The Musical, was distributed by Troma). Feeling that Sundance had become too "Hollywood" by charging film-makers high fees to entry his movies, showing multi-million-dollar "independent" movies and practicing an elitist structure and film selection process, Parker urged Kaufman to create his own film festival that was the direct independent opposite of Sundance, one that was completely FREE! and focused on independently produced film that was made without the Hollywood system in order to give first-time filmmakers a chance at getting their work seen.

Troma's annual two day film festival, Tromadance, has grown into an event that filmmakers and fans come from all over this big blue marble to attend. Since its early beginnings as a DIY grassroots alternative in Park City, Utah, TromaDance has never charged filmmakers to submit their work. All TromaDance screenings are free of charge. With the festival's strict "No VIP Policy", celebrities and fans are treated equally, including admission to the now legendary closing party.

Last June, TromaDance made the jump from Asbury Park, New Jersey to landmark The Paper Box in Brooklyn, NY. It was by far the most successful year in the festival's history. Both days saw The Paper Box packed to capacity from open to close and on into the night. The Brooklyn Vegan dubbed the Tromadance Afterparty: "The weirdest and best show Williamsburg has seen in a long while." Now, in 2015, Tromadance is poised to surpass last year's success but still keep the spotlight on independent filmmaking across the globe.

Thank YOU for making the 15th Annual TromaDance Film Festival the Best TromaDance Yet!

Posted on July 3, 2014

Horror! Comedy! Suspense! Music! Science!! The 15th Annual TromaDance Film Festival had everything the most rabid cinephile, pickiest independent film connoisseur, or die hard Troma fan could ask for. In spades. What it had most though was support from across the world over for truly independent art!

The Paper Box, a New York city art compound, hosted the two day festival allowing attendees ample space to enjoy the films as well as the creative atmosphere in which they could roam and network. Sgt. KabukiM'am NYPD and one festival-goer enjoy the beautiful New York weather outside in the courtyard of the Paper Box.

With TromaDance being the festival that premiered films like Human Centipede and the Taint, this year's films had a lot to live up to and they did not disappoint. Drew Bolduc's Science Team received a standing ovation and Troma fans ate up PopcornFlix's Evil Feed. Director Chrzu came all the way from Finland for the World Premiere of his film "NightSatan & the Loops of Doom" and we're sure the crowd's reaction made the many miles he traveled all worth it.

NewGrounds.Com animator Emily Youcis got up close and personal with TromaDance attendees participating in an interactive Q & A session moderated by Master of Ceremonies, Lloyd Kaufman after giving an exclusive sneak peak at her upcoming Alfred Alfer feature film.

The Netherlands, Mannequin Pussy, Dawn of Humans, and Hellbent Hooker (pictured below) unleashed alcohol soaked, New York City Rock n' Roll war-dances all over the TromaDance stage in front of a full capacity crowd. Literally. The Troma merch tables had to be put away to fit any more people into the building!
